09-04-2009
The Teacher Creativity Center completed a training session on educational counseling as part of the Silwan Community project which is funded by UNIFEM and implemented by the Teacher Creativity Center
The 8 day training session which targeted 15 mothers from Silwan had the objective of empowering women in addressing school issues that impact their children’s education and development

The training covered several topics including educational counseling, adolescent education, addressing violence issues and learning difficulties. The training was participatory and the mothers had an opportunity to discuss the issues parents and their children are exposed to and how parents can play a key role in helping their children in addressing and working on changing existing negative behaviors

Mothers were trained on the importance of their role in parents’ councils and were trained on the methodology of action learning based projects that they can implement in schools addressing problems in a systematic approach that has proven to be effective

The training was well attended and successfully completed despite the major difficulties Silwan Community is going through including the seizing of part of the Silwan community land by the occupation, the difficulty of reaching Silwan and the traditional roles imposed on females in the community.

The attendance of the full training by the 15 mothers showed their understanding of the importance of activating their role in improving the school environment for their children despite all the challenges existing
