Training of 50 civic education teachers on civic education concepts and the Foundations for Democracy implemented
The Teacher Creativity Center completed a 1 day workshop for 50 civic education teachers from different directorates of the West Bank as part of a one year project titled
(Civic Education in the West Bank and Gaza: Strengthening Analytical Thinking and Democratic Practices) and which is funded by the Mississippi Consortium for International Development (MCID) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and implemented by the Teacher Creativity Center.
The training was conducted by Dr. Mary Coleman of MCID who introduced the trainees to the one year project which has an objective of strengthening teachers’ and schools’ capacities to offer analytically strong and academically rigorous civic education curriculum that serves well the needs of the nation. A civic education training academy will be held for two weeks in January followed by a 2 week academy in July.
The trainees were introduced to the steps of the project with emphasis on the teacher manual which trainees will study and do assignments from. The teacher manual includes civic education pedagogy and course methodology, the nature of service learning and its benefits, stages of service-learning implementation, how service-learning can encourage good citizenship and the relationship between service-learning, civic knowledge, skills and dispositions. The manual includes case studies from all over the world.
The Teacher Creativity Center and supervisors of the Ministry of Education will follow-up with teachers as they post their assignment work on a website accessible for trainees and other MCID and TCC personnel.
