TCC invited by the Center of Civic Education to the first international showcase of Project Citizen
Palestine was one of 31 countries worldwide invited by the Center of Civic Education to the first international showcase of Project Citizen: Empowering a New Generation for Democracy held on July 15-17, 2007 in Washington D.C.
The Palestinian delegation of 4 female students and 4 males traveled to Capitol Hill with the TCC director, a member of the board of directors and the project coordinator. The 4 young ladies presented their project titled “The Hygiene Pollution Problem in Ramallah Governmental Hospital” which they had completed at Elespania Girls School in the academic year 2004/2005. Their project had won first place in Palestine from a total of over 100 projects implemented by students and it also won first place on the regional level from among 11 Arab countries.
During the international showcase, the students presented their project, answered questions and received a commendation of exceptional rating. Wisconsin State Senator Robert Jauch, who was a member of the evaluation committee for the West Bank team presentation, was so impressed and inspired that he adjourned the Wisconsin State Senate in honor of the team.
The male students of the Kufr Sur Boys School who were the winners for the 2005/2006 Project Citizen with their project titled “Solid Waste Disposal Problem in Tulkarem” supported and provided help to their fellow students and all enjoyed the international atmosphere of the showcase as well as the sight seeing activities.
The Palestinian student delegation included: Ayah Hasarmah, Wafa Abu Yaqoub, Sajidah Mohammad, Sara Khasib, Fouad Alriahi, Ahmed Hamza, Ibrahim Hamza and Mohammad Zedbda.
Refaat Sabbah the general director of TCC, Huthayfa Jalamna the project coordinator and Raida Alrifai of the board of directors attended the showcase and provided the students with all support needed.
Project Citizen is an interactive civic education program created by the Los Angeles Center for Civic Education that educates students on their role as competent, responsible citizens and on democratic citizenship. Participating students identify a community problem and the related public policy to it, discuss alternative solutions or policies, select a solution or proposed policy and put forth a work plan to bring it to the attention of responsible parties and decision makers.
